I'm alive!
It's been exciting. Work is cool, the people have pretty good morale, quite unlike HP.
I'm working with quite a bit of hardware. IBM laptops are *awesome*. If I were to get a PC again, it would be an IBM laptop.
XP SP 2 is horrid. Yes, security is good. Security by design is awesome. SP 2 is not secure by design.
Remember how fast your PC was when you first upgraded from a P2 to a P3, or to a P4? Well, at least in the beta builds, performance goes back to the P2 days!
Biased comparison: My 400MHz G4 on OS X 10.3 is faster than a 1.6GHz Athlon or 2.4GHz P4 on XP SP2. I mean, we're talking 3 year old Mac vs 3 year old PC running modern OSes... yuck. Actually, I should add that my Mac still feels faster than those machines with XP SP1, but SP2 definitely feels slower than SP1, sigh. More feed for the CPU upgrade machine I guess.
Of course my system isn't totally faster. A Rage 128 8mb video card is hands down slower than an nForce2 64mb video chipset, and 100MHz sdram lags way behind 533MHz ddr, and a 4,200 rpm hard drive is definitely slower than a 7,200 hard drive... but it's all about resource management and juggling. Hehe, I suppose I wanted to feel good about my 3 year old Mac, and work definitely does that :)
So many tempting deals now that I have a paycheck! Amazon has $100 off any Mac laptop, so an iBook G4 is like $1,000! Apple is selling refurbished laptops, so a 15" 867MHz PowerBook is $1,499! Apple also has a trade in program where I can send in my laptop for a $700 credit towards a new 15" Aluminum PowerBook... 1GHz for $1,299... Oh, and Good Guys has an offer... buy a laptop with their credit card, no down payment, no interest, no payments for 18 months! Debt looks so appealing now!
